Seite 1 von 6 ![]() European Centre for Renewable Energy in ökoEnergieland Güssing, situated in ökoEnergieland with a population of 4,000 inhabitants, is the administrative centre of a district with poor infrastructure and a population of about 27,000 people. According to statistics in 1988 this district was one of the poorest districts in Austria. Due to its unfavourable geographical position in the eastern region of Austria neighbouring the county border no large plants settled down here, and the whole district is characterised by a very unfavourable infrastructure of transport (there is no railway connection or motorway). All this resulted in a lack of workplaces (70% of the inhabitants commute weekly) and a very high rate of migration from the district. At the same time a very intensive tendency of the migration of capital from the district could be observed, which was due to the purchasing of energy (oil, electricity, fuel), while the available resources were hardly used (e.g.: 45% forest area). |
